School feeding caterers strike over arrears
School Feeding Programme caterers have declared a nationwide strike.
They have not been paid for some months.
The government has also failed to increase the amount needed to feed each child.
The angry caterers told journalists at a press conference in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, that they have no option than to resort to industrial action.
One of their leaders, Gifty Asamoah, told journalists: “School feeding caterers are public servants like teachers, police, doctors, nurses and other employees that provide state services but we are being discriminated against”.
“Can the government refuse to pay teachers for even one month? Why are they doing the opposite when it comes to caterers?” she wondered.
She insisted: “A contract is a contract and our human rights must not be abused.”
