UE/R: GES condemns assault on teachers and destruction of property at Bawku SHS
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of school property at Bawku Senior High School during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, GES said some students allegedly attacked the teachers and damaged school property.
According to preliminary reports, the incident may have been triggered by the enforcement of examination regulations and invigilation procedures.
GES described the actions of the students as unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline, respect and integrity expected within educational institutions.
“The actions of the alleged students are unacceptable, unjustifiable, and contrary to the core values of discipline, respect and integrity that underpin education,” the statement said.
The service expressed concern over the assault on the teachers, noting that attacks on educators carrying out their official duties threaten the safety of staff and the integrity of the educational system.
GES stated that teachers play an important role in ensuring that examinations are conducted fairly and transparently and that any form of intimidation or violence against them will not be tolerated.
Security personnel have since been deployed to the school to restore calm and ensure the safety of students, teachers and examination officials.
The Service said academic activities and the ongoing WASSCE examinations are continuing under enhanced security arrangements.
GES also confirmed that the injured teachers are receiving medical treatment and support.
A joint investigation involving GES and the security agencies has been launched to identify those responsible for the attack and the destruction of property.
The service said individuals found culpable will face disciplinary action and be dealt with in accordance with the laws of Ghana.
