WAEC: We write the same exams with all council members- GES

Education
Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh

Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, the Deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has clarified that Ghana continues to administer the same examinations as all member states of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

He emphasized that Ghana, along with Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia, remains an active and integral member of the examination governing council.

In his explanation, Dr. Tandoh stated that Ghana plays a significant role in the governance of WAEC.

He went ahead to say he serves as a council member in his capacity as Deputy Director-General of GES, and the Director-General of GES chairs the National Council Committee of WAEC.

He firmly denied any claims that Ghana has opted out of the council to conduct its own independent examinations.

“There has never been an academic year where Ghana wrote its own examinations without WAEC’s involvement,” Dr. Tandoh stated during an interview on the Ghana Yensom morning show, cohosted by Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku and Odyeeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

He urged Ghanaians to disregard the false claims, highlighting that Ghanaian students have continued to win international WAEC awards in recent years, including in 2022 and 2023. This, he pointed out, is a testament to the country's adherence to WAEC international standards in examination.

Dr. Tandoh also addressed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledging that the academic calendar was disrupted in 2021, 2022 and 2023, affecting the learning process.

These students scored excellent in four core subjects in the WAEC examination, he noted

However, he reiterated that the standards for quality education, especially under the Free Senior High School programme in secondary education, are evidenced by the examination results.

Dr. Tandoh reaffirmed that Ghana remains a committed member of WAEC, and all examinations are conducted under the council’s supervision, maintaining consistent standards across the member states
