The newly established Ashanti Regional Media Advisory Committee aims to protect the safety of journalists

Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, Chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), has called on journalists to rigorously cross-check and verify information from social media before broadcasting or publishing it.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Ashanti Regional Media Advisory Committee in Kumasi, Mr. Ayeboafo emphasised the dangers of spreading unverified information.

“Unverified information can lead to misinformation,” Mr. Ayeboafo warned.

“It is crucial for journalists to cross-check and verify the foundation of any information before disseminating it,” he urged.

He further urged journalists to conduct independent research to stay informed, which will enable them to challenge politicians making unsubstantiated claims.

“Journalists must report and execute their work objectively with the facts, without allowing personal feelings or emotions to influence their reporting.

“This ensures the public can make well-informed decisions,” he added.

The newly established Ashanti Regional Media Advisory Committee aims to protect the safety of journalists, especially during the election period, while promoting media responsibility and combating misinformation.

The committee members include Mr. Paul Adu-Gyamfi, Mr. Jonathan Frimpong, Mr. Kwame Adinkra, Mrs. Olivia Owusu Bannor, Mr. Kingsley Hope, and Mr. Ike Frimpong.

The committee will focus on settling complaints and engaging with the media on pressing issues to uphold the integrity and safety of journalism in the region.
