Akufo-Addo forms 5-member ad hoc c’ttee to strengthen fight against galamsey
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has established a five-member ministerial ad-hoc committee to assess the government's ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as "galamsey,."
The committee, comprised of senior government officials, is tasked with reviewing the effectiveness of current measures to curb illegal mining activities and address the widespread environmental damage it causes.
Leading the committee is National Security Minister Albert Kan-Dapaah, with Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor, Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, Employment Minister Ignatious Baffour Awuah, and Information Minister Fatima Abubakar as members.
Their mandate includes evaluating existing strategies and policies, identifying challenges faced by law enforcement agencies and local authorities in the fight against galamsey, and recommending reforms to enhance the government’s approach.
This initiative is part of the government's broader commitment to safeguarding the environment and halting illegal mining.
The findings and recommendations of the committee are expected to shape future policies and actions to address the galamsey crisis more effectively.
