All must jealously guard, protect Ghanaian journalists: Agortime-Ziope MP urges
The Member of Parliament and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Agortime-Ziope Constitutuency, Charles Agbeve, has vowed to take assertive steps to protect Ghanaian journalists and media houses against all types of assaults.
In an exclusive interview with Solomon Mensah-Ahiable, Mr Agbeve stressed the need to protect the fourth Estate of Ghana (the media).
"We all need to jealously guard the safety of all journalists and media houses in the country because they have proven beyond all doubt to hold government and other institutions accountable and must be commended," he stated.
"All hands must be on deck and I am committed to contest[ing] any laws that violate freedom of speech, straying from the principles of the rule of law."
“In recent times, journalists and media outlets have been targeted by political hoodlums while on assignment and this must stop because journalists are our own brothers and sister and must not be taken for granted or treated like an ordinary person[s]," he stressed.
The lawmaker and a member on the Health Committee of Parliament was on Ho 92.5 FM's Adanu Morning Show with Togbe Ahorgo 1.
"There is also a worrying trend of unprofessional practices by a section of the media due to many factors, including lack of appreciation for professional ethics and media ownership," Mr Agbeve, also, observed.
Thus, he urged media houses and journalists to be professional in the discharge of their duties to protect the peace of the country before, during and after election 2024.
He further stated that the anniversary celebration will be used as a platform to address these pressing issues.
He noted Parliament will do all that is in their power to ensure the safety of journalists and media houses, not condoning any form of unprofessionalism as the crucial election period approached.
"We shall try our best to maintain our peace because this election should be the most peaceful election ever and that the NDC will ensure to protect our enviable democracy," he said.
