Ashanti ECG workers go red, ban managers from security meetings over GM's arrest
Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region today, Wednesday, 24 April 2024, wore red attire and armbands to demand an apology from the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah.
This protest follows the arrest of their General Manager for Ashanti East, a move initiated by the regional Minister after power supply to the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) was disconnected.
Hoisting red flags as a symbol of their discontent, the ECG workers have banned all four of their managers in the region from attending regional Security Council meetings, positions they typically hold as automatic members.
The arrest of the General Manager for Ashanti East prompted immediate backlash from the ECG workers, who view the action as unjustified. Despite issuing an ultimatum for the Minister to withdraw the case from the police and issue an apology, the Minister has refused to comply, leading to escalating tensions between the workers and the regional authority.
Speaking on behalf of the ECG workers, the Senior Staff Union Chairman for Ashanti East ECG, Mr Osman Yusif Abdulai, expressed dissatisfaction with the Minister's refusal to apologise. He emphasised the workers' determination to stand their ground until their demands are met.
Echoing Mr Abdulai's sentiments, the National Vice Chairman for the Senior Staff Union, Mr. Bismark Adomah, reiterated the workers' stance and called for swift resolution to the impasse.
