Assaulting firefighters illegal and’ll be met with stringent legal consequences – GNFS warns public

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has condemned recent attacks on its personnel, which resulted in serious injuries and trauma.
The service has also pledged to pursue strict legal action against those responsible for said assaults and to defend its personnel vigorously.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 10 September 2024, the GNFS reported an incident that occurred on Tuesday, 3 September, when ADO II Abdul Aziz Annor, a firefighter from the Ministries Fire Station, was brutally assaulted by a driver and his companion.
The attack occurred while ADO II Annor was replenishing a fire truck at La Palm T-Junction in Accra. The assault left him with a fractured ankle, and he is currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital, with surgery scheduled for later this week, the GNFS said.
Two days later, firefighters from the Dansoman Fire Station faced both verbal and physical abuse from residents while responding to a fire incident near the Dansoman Roundabout, Accra. The altercation happened when the fire truck had briefly left to refill its water supply.
Despite the aggression, the firefighters, supported by two additional fire trucks, managed to control the blaze, preventing further damage to nearby properties.
"The matter has been reported to the Dansoman Police, and investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice," the GNFS stated.
The service reiterated assaulting firefighters was illegal and would be met with stringent legal consequences.
The GNFS emphasised the risks its personnel face daily while protecting lives and property.
“Our personnel risk their lives daily to protect citizens and property, and they deserve respect and support from the public,” the statement added.
The service assured it will provide comprehensive care for the injured firefighter and take all necessary legal measures to ensure justice for the affected personnel.
It also cautioned the public it would use every legal means available to safeguard its personnel while they carry out their duties.
