Bagbin recalls Parliament for urgent session Dec. 16
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced the recall of the House for an urgent session on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 10 a.m., with the venue to be disclosed later.
In a statement issued on Monday, 2 December 2024, the Speaker cited Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana as the basis for the recall.
The statement said: "Pursuant to Order 58 of the Standing Orders of the Parliament Of Ghana, I, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker Of Parliament, hereby give notice that the seventh meeting of the Fourth Session Of The Eighth Parliament Of The Fourth Republic shall commence on Monday, the 16th day of December, 2024, at ten o'clock in the forenoon at a place to be appointed by the Speaker in due course."
The move highlights the urgency of addressing critical national issues before the year ends, just weeks ahead of the inauguration of the ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The recall follows Speaker Bagbin’s decision on Tuesday, 26 November 2024 to decline a request by the Majority in Parliament to convene earlier.
In his response to the Majority, Speaker Bagbin stated that Parliament would resume after the general elections to focus on essential matters, ensuring a smooth transition to the new Parliament.
He emphasised the need for decorum in parliamentary proceedings, urging MPs to prioritize the national interest.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus backed Speaker Bagbin’s earlier stance, arguing that the Majority's request for an earlier recall was unnecessary and poorly timed.
