COCOBOD trial: God has shame my detractors-Opuni
Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Stephen Opuni, has expressed gratitude and relief after the Attorney- General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, withdrew all charges against him, businessman Seidu Agongo, and Agricult Ghana Limited.
The Accra High Court announced the withdrawal on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, marking the end of an eight-year legal battle.
Speaking to the media after the court proceedings, Dr. Opuni attributed his exoneration to divine intervention, stating:“All power and authority belong to the Almighty God and not human beings.
The living God I serve has disgraced and cursed my enemies, my persecutors, and all my destiny haters.”
The trial, which began in March 2018, initially involved 27 charges, including abetment of crime, defrauding by false pretence, and willfully causing financial loss to the state.
While Dr. Opuni and Mr. Agongo were earlier cleared of money laundering charges, both consistently maintained their innocence.
State Attorney Enam Loh Mensah informed the court of the decision, stating: “My Lord, pursuant to this, the Republic has filed a notice of withdrawal.”
Counsel for Dr. Opuni and Mr. Agongo, Samuel Cudjoe and Benson Nutsukpui, confirmed receipt of the notice.
Dr. Opuni’s remarks reflected a deep sense of vindication after enduring years of legal scrutiny.
With the withdrawal of all charges, the case officially comes to an end, closing one of Ghana’s most high-profile legal battles in recent years.
