Cabinet approves immediate payment of salaries for 6,500 unpaid nurses and midwives

The Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the Cabinet has given approval for the immediate payment of salaries to 6,500 nurses and midwives who have been working without pay since their recruitment.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Accra, the Minister explained that when the current government assumed office in January 2025, it inherited a backlog of about 13,500 nurses and midwives who had been posted without financial clearance.
According to Mr. Akandoh, salaries for 7,000 of these health professionals have already been processed and paid, while Cabinet has now approved the release of funds to settle the remaining 6,500, with payments expected to begin in November 2025.
He further revealed that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has also taken steps to regularise the employment of 883 junior doctors, 800 medical doctors, and over 17,000 rotational health professionals who were previously working without official clearance.
This move, he noted, forms part of the government’s broader commitment to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare workforce and improve motivation among health workers nationwide.
