Chinese ceramics firm given one-week ultimatum to halt activities polluting river Anankore
The Wangkang Ceramics Company Limited, a Chinese firm based in Eshiem in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, has been given a one-week ultimatum to cease illegal activities obstructing the flow and purity of River Anankore, a vital water body in Inchaban.
The directive was issued by Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, following complaints from the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Water Resources Commission (WRC) regarding the company’s failure to comply with environmental regulations.
Earnest Hoffman, an officer at WRC, briefed the Minister on the firm’s continued defiance, despite earlier instructions to halt actions affecting the river.
The GWCL had reported the company to the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) after unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issue.
Efforts by GWCL and WRC to engage the company in a settlement were repeatedly obstructed due to the firm’s entrenched stance.
However, on Friday, March 7, 2025, Minister Joseph Nelson brokered an agreement to resolve the impasse, which had persisted since last year.
The Minister emphasized that the production and supply of clean water to the metropolis and surrounding communities must not be compromised.
As a result, he ordered the Chinese firm to immediately find an alternative method of managing its waste and ensure that River Anankore remains free from pollution and obstructions.
