Credit tug-of-war over Eban-Akoma oil discoveries

A political dispute has erupted over who deserves credit for the recent declaration of commerciality of Ghana’s Eban and Akoma oil and gas discoveries located in the Cape Three Points area of the Western Region.
According to the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Mr Collins Adomako, the achievements should be attributed to the Akufo-Addo administration, under whose tenure both discoveries were made and appraised.
Mr. Adomako pointed out that the Akoma discovery was made in 2019, followed by the Eban discovery in 2021, both during President Akufo-Addo’s time in office.
He further emphasised that the appraisal programme for the two fields was approved in July 2022 by the same administration, which also communicated the commercial potential of the fields to the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Green Transition.
“These are not new developments. The Eban and Akoma discoveries, as well as their appraisal, were the direct result of decisions taken by the Akufo-Addo government,” Mr. Adomako asserted.
He argued that attempts to credit the current administration with the success of these discoveries would be historically inaccurate and unfair.
The commerciality declaration marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector, paving the way for full field development and eventual production.
However, with political actors scrambling to claim credit, the issue has quickly taken a partisan turn.
The Ministry of Energy has yet to respond to the competing claims.
