Dr. Richard Akplotsyi, a Senior Lecturer in the Built and Natural Environment at Ho Technical University, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency to address the worsening crisis of illegal mining (galamsey).

Speaking on Ho FM's Adanu Morning Show with Togbe Ahorgo I, Dr. Akplotsyi expressed frustration over the slow pace of prosecution for individuals fueling the menace.

He urged the President to take decisive action to curb the rampant destruction caused by illegal mining.

His call follows President Mahama’s recent warning to his appointees to stay away from illegal mining or risk losing their positions.

Dr. Akplotsyi further urged the President to thoroughly vet individuals before appointing them to government positions to prevent future dismissals over galamsey-related activities.

He also condemned the recent attack on officials of the Forestry Commission in their fight against illegal mining, emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement and protection for frontline officers.

Dr. Akplotsyi reiterated his appeal for swift and bold action to safeguard Ghana’s natural environment and prevent further destruction of water bodies, forests, and farmlands.
