E/R: Koforidua High Court injunction halts Awukudae celebrations in Akropong Akuapem
The High Court in Koforidua has granted an injunction restraining the planned celebration of Awukudae at Akropong Akuapem, prohibiting all related activities scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, or any other date within the month of May.
The court order was issued following an application filed under Section 1(6) of the Public Order Act by the Inspector General of Police at the Eastern Regional High Court.
In its ruling, the court restrained the Queen Mother of the Akuapem Traditional Area, Nana Afua Nketia Obuo II, alongside the Asonahene, Nana Kwasi Omenako, the Twafohene, Nana Okromansa Amoah, and the Nkotiah Abusuapanin, Odehye Edmund Ohene Asa Agyekum, from organising or participating in the festival.
The restriction additionally applies to any persons acting through them, effectively barring the respondents and their representatives from holding any related event at Akropong Akuapem or elsewhere.
The legal order, issued on May 19, 2026, was granted after the court reviewed an affidavit submitted by Inspector Nuhu Mumuni of the Eastern Regional Police Command in Koforidua.
The court explicitly stated that the respondents are prohibited from proceeding with any Awukudae celebration or associated activity within the specified period and jurisdiction.
According to authorities, the ruling forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to maintain public order and prevent potential disturbances linked to the planned event.
