The chief and residents of Koranteng Abotan, a farming community near Maame Krobo in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region, are urgently appealing to the government for the construction of a bridge to restore safe access to the town.

The appeal follows severe flooding that rendered the existing bridge impassable, cutting off the community from Maame Krobo and the surrounding areas.

The situation has disrupted daily life and caused immense hardship for residents, particularly farmers who depend on the route to transport their goods to market.

Tragically, the flooding recently led to the death of a pregnant woman who was unable to cross the swollen stream to seek medical care — a loss that has intensified calls for swift government action.

Speaking to reporters, Nana Asiedu Kotwe, Chief of Koranteng Abotan, urged Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, to honour a campaign promise to construct the bridge, emphasising that the community has waited far too long for relief.

“Farmers are losing their livelihoods, children are missing school, and lives are at risk every time it rains,” he lamented.

“We are pleading with government authorities to treat this as an emergency.”

Residents are calling on both local and national authorities to immediately intervene by reconstructing the bridge and providing support to affected farmers who have suffered significant post-harvest losses.

They are also urging the government to implement a comprehensive infrastructure plan to improve roads, drainage systems, and bridges in flood-prone rural communities to prevent future tragedies.
