Gwira Traditional Council calls for establishment of Sub-Metro to boost development

The Gwira Traditional Council in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region has appealed to the Local Government Minister to establish a Sub-Metro in the area to facilitate development.
According to the traditional leaders, the Gwira area constitutes two-thirds of the municipality, with a population of approximately 10,000 residents. However, despite its size, the community continues to grapple with poor infrastructure, including deplorable roads.
Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Council, Awulae Angama Tuagyan, lamented that since the community’s inception, not a single kilometre of road has been asphalted.
He highlighted the urgent need for repairs to the Gwira Dominase Bridge and another key bridge linking the community to Prestea, stressing that the poor road network poses a major challenge to residents.
In addition to road concerns, Awulae Angama Tuagyan pointed out other pressing issues, including poor network connectivity and inadequate healthcare facilities.
He, however, acknowledged the previous NDC administration for establishing Gwiraman Senior High School, which has been performing well in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
To further enhance the school's success, he appealed to the current government to provide a boarding facility, which he believed would improve educational opportunities for students.
The Gwira community is also facing challenges in attracting and retaining national service personnel, as many refuse postings to the area due to the harsh living conditions.
In response, the community has introduced an initiative to offer some incentives to the government to encourage personnel to stay.
Adding his voice to the call for a sub-metro, Chief of Gwira Banso, Nana Ette Akrade II, emphasized that such a move would be a game-changer in addressing the community’s challenges.
He made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Western Regional Minister.
In response, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring development in all parts of the country.
He cited the establishment of Gwiraman Senior High School under the previous NDC administration as a clear demonstration of the government’s dedication to the area’s progress.
