Ho Education Director calls for stronger laws against sexual misconduct in schools

The Ho Municipal Director of Education, Esther Yeboah-Adzimah, has urged the development of a comprehensive law to address sexual misconduct in both public and private schools as a means of safeguarding female students.
She explained that such legislation would serve as a deterrent to teachers who exploit their positions to engage in inappropriate relationships—whether consensual or non-consensual—with female learners.
Madam Yeboah-Adzimah made the call during a stakeholder engagement held in Ho, Volta Region, to commemorate this year’s International Day of the Girl Child.
The event was supported by the Member of Parliament for Ho Central, Edem Kpotosu.
She appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), educational institutions, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to collaborate in drafting a legislative instrument on sexual misconduct in schools, present it to Parliament, and ensure its passage into law.
According to her, the current GES Code of Conduct lacks sufficient enforcement power, as past incidents have shown that parental interference often allows implicated teachers to escape punishment.
Dr. Yeboah-Adzimah further advised teachers to resist any form of seduction from students and report such cases promptly to the appropriate authorities for action.
She also encouraged local Assemblies to enact bylaws restricting teenagers—especially girls—from loitering at night in indecent attire, as a way of promoting discipline and safety.
MP Edem Kpotosu, in his remarks, urged girls to remain focused on their education and strive for excellence.
He also encouraged them to participate in community-oriented initiatives such as tree planting to combat climate change and contribute positively to their communities.
