The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Louisa Hanna Bisiw-Kotei, has renewed the government’s commitment to safeguarding schoolchildren and residents of Atetem in the Adansi Asokwa District from the dangers of illegal mining (galamsey).

During her first visit to the community in June, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei was confronted with what she described as a “horrific” scene — deep mining pits dug dangerously close to the Atetem District Assembly Basic School, constant noise from excavators and floating machines disrupting lessons, and polluted rivers, including the Subin and Gyimi.

“This is nothing short of horror,” she said at the time.

“I am devastated by what I am seeing.

I am concerned about the psyche of these kids.”

Residents earlier revealed they feared attacks from illegal miners whenever they attempted to resist the destructive activities. Prior operations in the area led to the impoundment of eight excavators and the arrest of several illegal miners, including six Chinese nationals.

Progress After Intervention

Five months later, the MDF team returned on Wednesday to assess progress after the clampdown on illegal mining. Reclamation works are now ongoing behind the school where a large pit once posed a deadly threat to pupils.

National security operatives accompanying the team burnt an abandoned chanfan machine still left on site.

To inspire and support the affected children, Dr. Bisiw-Kotei presented educational materials to the school.

“When we last visited, one child told me he wanted a gun.

That is a reflection of what they see each passing day,” she said.

“I have come here today to offer them hope — and that is what we stand for.”

She assured community leaders that the government remains committed to protecting vulnerable communities and ensuring that perpetrators of illegal mining face justice.

“Nananom, the President and my Minister want me to assure you that you will be protected.

Those threatening your community will be dealt with.

Already, those arrested are being tried,” she added.
