Majority of Ghanaians believe nation is ‘off track’ – Afrobarometer report

An overwhelming 82 per cent of Ghanaians believe the country is on the wrong path, according to the latest Afrobarometer report from the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD).
Released in Accra on Thursday, 31 October 2024, the 2024 report, titled “Citizens’ Policy Priorities, Economic Conditions and Government Performance: Highlights from Afrobarometer Round 10 Survey in Ghana,” signals widespread discontent with the country’s governance and economic direction.
This level of dissatisfaction, while slightly reduced from last year’s 87 per cent, reveals ongoing frustration with the nation’s economic management and governance. Only 15 per cent of respondents expressed confidence that Ghana is moving in the right direction.
The survey highlights clear priorities from Ghanaians for policy reforms.
Notably, 85 per cent of those surveyed favour the continuation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, a popular policy providing access to education.
Additionally, 80 per cent of respondents voiced strong opposition to the electronic transactions levy (E-levy), calling for its repeal as a necessary relief in challenging economic times.
Furthermore, the report reveals that 82 per cent of Ghanaians have faced poverty, with unemployment ranking as the nation’s top concern.
Many also report significant difficulties accessing essential services such as healthcare, clean water, and basic goods, underscoring the need for swift action on social services.
