OSP partners AngloGold Ashanti to tackle corruption in mining sector

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has intensified its anti-corruption drive in Ghana’s mining sector through a strategic partnership with AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), aimed at raising awareness and strengthening accountability among industry stakeholders.
At a stakeholder engagement held in Obuasi, the OSP collaborated with the management of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine to educate participants on the legal consequences of corruption and the importance of integrity in mining operations.
Director for Strategy and Research at the OSP, Mr. Samuel Appiah Darko, led the engagement, outlining the Office’s mandate to investigate, prosecute, and recover proceeds of corruption involving public officials, politicians, their relatives, and private entities.
He also introduced participants to the OSP’s whistleblower channels, stressing the availability of protection and reward schemes for individuals who report corrupt activities.
“We are strengthening the fight against corruption, and the mining sector must not be left out.
Corruption affects revenue, community development, and investor confidence,” Mr. Appiah Darko stated.
AngloGold Ashanti’s Managing Director, Mr. Samuel Boakye Pobee, reiterated the company’s unwavering zero-tolerance policy on corruption and urged all stakeholders to uphold ethical standards in their operations.
“This engagement reflects our strong commitment to transparent and responsible mining.
Corruption has no place in our processes, and we stand with the OSP in ensuring accountability,” he noted.
The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including AGA staff, contractors, traditional leaders, government officials, and media representatives.
The gathering emphasised a shared commitment to clean governance and ethical conduct in Ghana’s vital mining industry.
Both the OSP and AGA described the initiative as a significant step towards building public trust and safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.
