Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has called on the youth of Ghana and Africa to harness their influence, innovation, and leadership potential to drive transformation across the continent.

Speaking at the International Youth Empowerment Summit (IYES) at UPSA, Dr. Omane Boamah reaffirmed his strong belief that Ghana and Africa can rise from poverty and deprivation if leaders and young people tap into their limitless potential.

Delivering a speech on "The Power of Influence: The Youth as Architects of Transformation," the Defence Minister highlighted the responsibilities of young people as changemakers.

"The destiny of Ghana—and Africa—rests in our hands. Influence is a powerful tool, and how we wield it will determine our future," he stated.

He outlined eight key principles for responsible leadership and influence:

Lead with Character and Integrity – True leadership is about impact, not titles. Innovate Relentlessly – Many major technological breakthroughs were achieved by young minds. Be the Change in Your Communities – Influence can come from simple actions, such as mentoring or fighting injustice. Develop Emotional Intelligence – Self-awareness and empathy are critical for effective leadership. Strengthen Collaboration Among Youth Groups – Real change requires partnerships across industries and cultures. Balance Influence with Responsibility – Leadership must be exercised wisely. Cultivate Love – Genuine care for humanity strengthens leadership. Pursue Excellence – It is never too late to strive for greatness.

Dr. Omane Boamah also urged young people to take concrete steps towards self-empowerment and national development, including:

Being a positive influencer in their communities. Using technology wisely for education, innovation, and business. Surrounding themselves with like-minded individuals who encourage growth. Staying informed on national and global issues to become proactive leaders. Engaging in environmental and social causes to secure the future. Seeking mentorship and lifelong learning as knowledge continues to evolve.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Omane Boamah reminded the audience that influence is bidirectional and multi-dimensional.

He encouraged the youth to view themselves as rivers—strong, determined, and ever-flowing—shaping the future of the continent.
