A petition has been submitted to the Office of the President seeking the removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, over alleged constitutional violations.

The petitioner, Ofosu-Appiah Daniel, accuses the EC Chair of incompetence, bias, and actions that have eroded public confidence in the Electoral Commission.

The petition also calls for the removal of her deputies, Dr. Bossman Asare (Deputy Chairperson in charge of Corporate Affairs), Samuel Tettey (Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations), and Dr. Peter Appiahene, a member of the Commission’s board.

The petition, which was submitted on Monday, January 27, 2025, cites Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as the legal basis for the request.

It accuses the EC Chair and her deputies of gross misconduct, human rights violations, and incompetence in carrying out their official duties.

According to the petitioner, the actions and inactions of Jean Mensa and her deputies have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and violated constitutional provisions, including Articles 42, 46, 23, and 296.

“By these actions and inactions, the Chairperson and her deputies have undermined the integrity of the Electoral Commission and breached their constitutional duties… Their continued stay in office poses a threat to the Ghanaian people in the electoral process,” the petition stated.

The Office of the President is expected to review the petition and determine the next course of action.
