S/R: Floods displace 800 locals in Buipe

Severe flooding in Buipe in Ghana's Savanna Region, has resulted in the complete displacement of, at least, 800 locals, as reported by disaster management officials.
The flooding, attributed to days of relentless rainfall and an overflow from the Black Volta river, has adversely impacted the local population, affecting approximately 1,500 residents.
The devastation caused by the floodwaters extends to the destruction of 300 houses, schools, and shops.
Notable areas affected include Buipe Bridge, Zongo, R/C school, Buipe Bato, and Ali Complex.
Mr Nbonwura Mustapha, the Central Gonja district director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), revealed that collaborative efforts with organisations like the Red Cross Society and the Ghana Education Service are underway to provide temporary accommodations for those displaced by the disaster.
He said the floods have dealt the residents a damning economic blow as grinding mills have been submerged, businesses shuttered, and livelihoods disrupted.
There is also heightened concern about the potential outbreak of waterborne diseases, such as cholera, in the wake of the flooding.
Mr Iddrisu Salia Kamara, the district chief executive for Central Gonja, said the government and other stakeholders are engaged in discussions with the affected community members regarding possible relocation as part of a long-term strategy to address the recurring flood challenges faced by the Buipe community.
