Sand and Stone Truck Drivers urge accountability in axle load enforcement
The National Sand and Stone Tipper Truck Drivers Association has called for accountability and fairness in the enforcement of axle load regulations, blaming institutional failures for the current crisis.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Anthony Mensah, National Public Relations Officer of the Association, stated that the drivers are not solely responsible for overloading, citing the lack of weighing equipment at loading points and the varying weights of materials.
The Association has written several petitions to relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ghana Standards Authority, and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, highlighting the challenges and proposing solutions.
According to Mensah, the permissible weight limit of 30.5 tons is often exceeded due to customer demands and the physical design of the trucks, which can safely carry only 9-14.5 tons.
The Association is calling for state-owned tipper trucks to be placed on rail bridges for fair enforcement and for authorities to take responsibility for the crisis.
The press conference was held ahead of Farmers' Day, observed on December 5, 2025, and the Association extended greetings to farmers and urged the incoming National Best Farmer to collaborate with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to combat illegal mining activities.
