Tijjanniya Muslim Council rejects legitimacy of newly formed National Muslim Conference

A sharp division is unfolding within Ghana’s Muslim community as the Tijjanniya Muslim Council of Ghana, one of the country’s largest Islamic groups, has openly rejected the legitimacy of the recently established National Muslim Conference of Ghana (NMCG).
In a formal letter to President John Dramani Mahama, the Council expressed “deep concern” over reports suggesting that the NMCG has been recognised as the sole representative body for Muslims in Ghana.
The correspondence, signed by Imam Hassan on behalf of the Supreme Leader and President of the Tijjanniya Muslim Council, dismissed the claims as “unfounded and unacceptable.”
“The Tijjanniya Muslim Council of Ghana had no involvement in the establishment of the National Muslim Conference of Ghana, nor is our Supreme Leader a signatory to its formation,” the statement emphasised.
The Council urged President Mahama to step in and ensure that no single group assumes a monopoly over Muslim representation in government affairs, warning that such a move could create “destabilisation” within the community.
In addition, the Council appealed to Imams and Muslim leaders who have endorsed the NMCG to reconsider their position in the interest of unity and harmony among Ghana’s Muslim population.
