Western Regional Rent Control hit by massive staff shortage

The Western Regional Office of the Rent Control Department is facing a severe staffing crisis, with only three personnel managing rent-related issues across the entire region.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Sonu Courage Cornelius disclosed this challenge during an interview on Good Morning Taadi show on Taadi FM’s hosted by Emmanuel Akomene Acheampong.
According to Mr. Cornelius, the regional office comprises just one Rent Officer, himself, and a National Service personnel, leaving them overwhelmed by the growing workload.
The situation is further exacerbated by the lack of essential support staff, including a Human Resources Officer and a Secretary.
“It’s been over a year since I requested additional staff, but nothing has been done,” he lamented.
“We are overstretched, and this is severely affecting our ability to regulate rents effectively and provide much-needed support to both landlords and tenants.”
He called on the government to urgently address the staffing deficit, emphasizing the department’s crucial role in ensuring fair and affordable housing in the region.
The staffing challenges have raised concerns among stakeholders, who fear that the lack of adequate personnel could lead to increased rent-related disputes and the exploitation of tenants.
Many are urging authorities to take swift action to strengthen the Rent Control Department and enhance its capacity to handle the rising demand for its services.
