COVID-19 vaccine: Second dose rollout begins Wednesday – Akufo-Addo
President Akufo-Addo has announced that the second phase of the national vaccination exercise against the Coronvirus will begin on Wednesday, 19 May 2021.
The rollout of the second dose of vaccines will run from Wednesday, 19 May 2021 to Wednesday 26 May 2021
“I am happy to announce that beginning Wednesday, May 19 to Wednesday 26 May, the deployment of the second dose of vaccines will take place across the designated vaccination centres in the 43 districts approximately 12 weeks after the first jab as the science prescribes. More details of the deployment will be communicated by the Ghana Health Service in the coming week,” the President said in his 25th national broadcast since the outbreak of the virus in Ghana on Sunday, 16 May 2021.
Beneficiaries of the second rollout exercise will be the segmented groups who received their first doses in March.
The exercise will cover frontline health workers, adults of 60 years and above, frontline government officials, media practitioners, frontline workers in the formal sector and persons with underlying health conditions in 43 selected districts across the country.
Ghana received 350,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the Kotoka International Airport from the Democratic Republic of Congo under the Covax facility on Friday, 7 May 2021.
Some 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine were initially received on 24 February 2021.
Following the procurement of the first batch of vaccines, the country, on Tuesday, 2 March 2021, kicked off its mass Covid-19 vaccination exercise in 42 selected districts in the Greater Accra, Kumasi and Western regions.
The President further encouraged continuous strict compliance to restrictions and safety protocols to control the spread of the virus.
“Until we vaccinate the requisite numbers of Ghanaians and achieve herd immunity, which will help return our lives to normalcy, the Imposition of Restrictions Act 2020 (Act 1012), will remain in force and the security agencies will not relent in their efforts to enforce it,” he noted.
