GA/R: Police deploys 24/7 security at Mamprobi Polyclinic after stolen newborn rescued
The Accra Regional Police Command has instituted round-the-clock security at Mamprobi Polyclinic following the reported theft and subsequent rescue of a four-day-old baby boy from the facility’s postnatal ward.
Police say the enhanced protection, which includes 24-hour officer deployment, is aimed at safeguarding patients, newborns, staff and visitors while restoring public confidence in the safety of healthcare centres.
The move comes after an incident on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, when an unidentified woman allegedly posed as a nurse and unlawfully entered the ward before taking the infant, the son of Precious Ankomah.
Following intensive investigations, officers from the Dansoman Divisional Police Command arrested the suspect, identified as Latifa Salifu, a day later at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with the baby.
Preliminary checks indicated that the suspect could not provide any medical records to support her claim that she had delivered the child. She was subsequently detained to assist with investigations.
The baby has since been safely reunited with his mother, who identified him through a distinctive birthmark, and has been referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care.
The Ghana Police Service says the strengthened security measures will remain in place as a precaution, while hospital authorities have been advised to tighten access control to maternity and postnatal wards.
Police also urged the public to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious individuals or activity within health facilities as investigations continue.
