Ghana launches Coartem 'baby' to strengthen fight against malaria

Ghana’s Minister for Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced the introduction of Coartem Baby, a new malaria medicine formulated specifically for infants.
The launch marks the latest addition to Ghana’s arsenal in the fight against malaria, particularly targeting the protection of children under five, who remain the most vulnerable.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s remarkable progress in reducing malaria-related deaths.
“In the past decade, Ghana has reduced malaria deaths by an astounding 97%.
We achieved this through community engagement, indoor spraying, treated mosquito nets, education, and the most recently, the introduction of the malaria vaccine,” he stated.
He noted that Coartem Baby addresses a critical gap by providing a safe, effective treatment option for infants, ensuring no group is left behind in the country’s malaria elimination efforts.
The Health Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building on recent successes and called on health professionals, caregivers, and communities to support the nationwide rollout of the new medicine.
