Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to regional health collaboration as the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, represented her boss, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at the 2nd International Conference on Lassa Fever (LIC 2025).

The three-day conference, organised by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) in partnership with regional and international health institutions, brings together policymakers, researchers, and health professionals to strengthen cooperation in combating Lassa fever and other emerging infectious diseases.

This year’s theme, “Beyond Borders: Strengthening Regional Cooperation to Combat Lassa Fever and Emerging Infectious Diseases,” emphasises the critical role of collaboration in tackling health challenges that transcend national boundaries.

Key discussions at the conference focus on advancing vaccine and diagnostic research while developing a sustainable roadmap for regional responses to infectious disease outbreaks.

Lassa fever, a rodent-borne viral illness endemic to West Africa, poses a significant health threat due to its high fatality rate when untreated.

Early management with antiviral drugs and supportive care has been shown to improve survival, while prevention relies on maintaining hygiene, limiting rodent exposure, and safeguarding against infected bodily fluids.

Speaking at the conference, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah highlighted Ghana’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and regional partnerships.

She noted that the initiative aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of improving healthcare systems and preparedness in Ghana and across the continent.

“I am excited to engage with fellow health professionals and experts from across Africa as we explore innovative ways to enhance healthcare delivery and safeguard our people against emerging threats,” she said.

The LIC 2025 conference is expected to conclude with a joint resolution on regional strategies for surveillance, research, and coordinated response mechanisms against Lassa fever and other epidemics.
