Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023: Social Watch Africa heightens efforts to eradicate period stigma

Social Watch Africa, an NGO which focuses on improving formal education, strengthening local and central government systems have joined the campaign to improve menstrual hygiene and eradicating stigma associated with menstruation in young girls.
Commemorating this year's Menstrual Hygiene Day, the organisation visited the La Nkwantanang MA basic school 5 in the Adentan Municipality to educate and support girls cultivate actions towards hygienic menstruation.
The day which is celebrated on the 28th of May every year has been selected globally to acknowledge the 28 days average length of a menstrual cycle. The theme for this year is 'Making Menstrual Hygiene a Normal Fact of Life by 2030'.
Though focused on girls, both sex have been advised not to stigmatise their colleagues who are in that phase of life.
The organisation used the opportunity to share some sanitary pads to the girls.
Addressing the media, Lead Advocate of Social Watch Africa, Kojo Asiamah Addo, added to calls on the Ghanaian government to scrap taxes on menstrual products or possibly make sanitary pads free and available for basic schools in the country.
Meanwhile, the Head Teacher of the school, Mad. Christiana Nanbu Ngala, advised parents to make the menstrual hygiene of their wards a priority.
