NAS chief pays courtesy call on Korle-Bu CEO to strengthen referral coordination
The Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), Dr George Kojo Owusu, has paid a courtesy call on the Chief Executive Officer of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to reinforce collaboration between the two institutions.
The visit aimed at strengthening ties and enhancing patient experience through improved communication and referral coordination.
In his remarks, Dr. Owusu reaffirmed the Ambulance Service’s commitment to ensuring timely communication and efficient referral management with Korle-Bu.
He explained that deepened collaboration is critical, particularly as the hospital receives more than 70 percent of inter-hospital referrals nationwide.
He noted that the issue of “no bed syndrome” cannot be addressed in isolation, stressing the need for practical, system-wide measures to improve patient flow and streamline referral processes.
Responding, the CEO of Korle-Bu, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, emphasised that effective and timely communication between institutions is vital to preventing avoidable complications and minimising casualties.
He stated that seamless information exchange would significantly enhance patient outcomes.
Dr. Adam also highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building for NAS personnel and welcomed the recruitment of physician assistants, describing it as a positive intervention that would reduce response times and ease pressure on emergency services at the hospital.
The Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, Dr Harry Akoto, reiterated the hospital’s commitment to delivering the highest standard of care within available resources.
He called for stronger collaboration among health facilities nationwide to ease the burden on Korle-Bu and ensure more efficient case distribution across the healthcare system.
Members of Korle-Bu’s Central Management Team who participated in the meeting included Director of Pharmacy Dr Charles Ofei-Palm, Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services Rev Aimee Esinam Akotey, Executive Assistant Getrude Kinney, Acting Chief Internal Auditor Ibrahim Abu-Jajah, and Head of Public Relations Mustapha Salifu.
