Nurse educators threaten strike over review of allawa

The Nurse Educators’ Group (NEG) has threatened to withdraw classroom teaching and other services in all health training institutions across the country from Friday, 2 September if government fails to meet its demands.
According to the group, it made a request through a communiqué on Monday, 20 June, at the end of its 2022 Annual General Meeting held at Sunyani to the Ministry of Health for a review of some allowances and other related matters for its members amidst the current economic challenge in the country.
However, nothing has been heard from the Ministry of Health following their call.
A statement issued by NEG said: “We are appalled by the inept attitude of the Ministry of Health relative to our call on the review of the 2015 approved allowances rates and other related matters after several reminders.”
The group noted that “after the issuance of the communiqué, some National Executives made a follow-up to the ministry but to no avail. No engagement has been made so far to kick start the negotiations on the review of the proposed rates.”
The group described the silence from the Ministry as “worrisome.”
The “Group is compelled under the current economic hardships and the lukewarm attitude demonstrated by the health training institutions unit (HTIU) of the ministry to publicly communicate to Ghanaians the road map of our intention to withdraw some of our services from the various health training institutions across the country,” the statement continued.
The group will from today, Thursday, 11 to Wednesday, 17 August 2022 begin “wearing of red arm/wrist bands in all health training institutions.”
From Thursday, 18 to Friday, 19 August 2022, the group will begin the “Withdrawal of care-study supervision and conduct of mid-semester exams” and on Friday, 2nd September 2022, “Withdrawal of classroom teaching and other services in all health training institutions.”
NEG, therefore, urged its members to follow the stipulated “road map religiously” until they hear otherwise from leadership.
