V/R: Agortime Kpetoe authorities assure residents amid Tordze river contamination

Residents of Agortime Kpetoe in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region are facing potential water scarcity following a reported contamination of the Tordze River, their primary water source.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, when a truck transporting agrochemicals overturned near Tove in the Republic of Togo, leading to a spill into the river.
In response, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) issued a press release cautioning communities along the Tordze River to refrain from using its water for drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing until comprehensive safety assessments are completed.
The VRCC emphasized the necessity of evaluating the contamination levels before deeming the water safe for any human activities.
Despite these warnings, local authorities have sought to reassure the public.
Nene Akoto Sah VII, a retired Ghana Water Company staff member and warlord of Agortime Kpetoe, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the river may not be contaminated.
He noted that officials from the Fisheries Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, and Community Water and Sanitation Agency have collected water samples for laboratory analysis to determine the presence and extent of any contamination.
Mr. Kumador Bernard, the District Head of Community Water and Sanitation, urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that thorough investigations are underway.
He emphasized that no health facilities have reported any related outbreaks, indicating that the situation is under control.
In the interim, the VRCC has directed Municipal and District Assemblies in the affected areas to provide alternative water sources to the impacted communities.
This measure aims to alleviate the immediate challenges posed by the potential contamination and ensure residents have access to safe water for their daily needs.
Residents have expressed their concerns and frustrations, appealing to the government for a permanent solution to the recurring water issues in the region.
The community's reliance on the Tordze River underscores the urgency of establishing sustainable and safe water infrastructure to prevent future crises.
As investigations continue, authorities are committed to keeping the public informed and implementing necessary measures to safeguard the health and well-being of all affected residents
