Abraham Koomson urges Attorney-General to secure return of Ken Ofori-Atta
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr Abraham Koomson, has called on the Attorney-General to take decisive steps to ensure the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to face ongoing investigations.
Mr. Koomson said national focus should remain firmly on accountability for alleged economic mismanagement rather than on political arguments involving the New Patriotic Party (NPP), under whose administration the former minister served.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, February 21, he questioned why Mr. Ofori-Atta reportedly left the country if there was no wrongdoing during his tenure.
“If the NPP did the right thing, why is it that their finance minister has absconded from his own country?” he asked, insisting that the priority should be justice, not political defence.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted, citing alleged corruption and procurement irregularities during his time in office.
The investigations are said to involve transactions linked to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), the National Cathedral project, and other related matters.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has reportedly submitted a formal extradition request to the United States authorities to facilitate his return to Accra.
Reports indicate that Mr. Ofori-Atta was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in January 2026 after his visa was revoked.
Both the Attorney-General’s Department and the OSP are said to be pursuing legal and diplomatic avenues to secure his extradition.
Mr. Koomson further urged the NPP to cooperate with state authorities by supporting efforts to make the former minister available for questioning, rather than applying pressure on the current administration.
He emphasised that ensuring accountability in the management of Ghana’s finances is critical to restoring public confidence in the country’s economic governance.
