Africa must unite for stronger bargaining power Ablakwa
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for greater unity among African nations to enhance the continent’s bargaining power on the global stage.
He emphasised that Africa’s strength lies in collective action and strategic partnerships.
“If Africa speaks with one voice, we will be in a much stronger position to negotiate favourable trade agreements, secure better diplomatic relations, and protect our shared interests,” he stated.
Ablakwa, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, was sworn into office on Friday, 7th February.
He reiterated his commitment to leading Ghana’s foreign policy with integrity and patriotism, ensuring that the nation’s interests align with broader African development goals.
“As Foreign Affairs Minister, I will be guided by principles of integrity and a deep love for the country.
But beyond that, I believe Ghana’s progress is tied to Africa’s collective success,” he added.
According to Ablakwa, economic and diplomatic unity among African nations is essential for overcoming common challenges such as trade barriers, security threats, and global economic imbalances.
He urged African leaders to prioritise collaboration and regional integration, stressing that “no single African country can compete effectively on its own in today’s global economy.”
He highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a step in the right direction but insisted that stronger political will and cooperation are needed to maximise its benefits.
Ablakwa expressed confidence that Ghana will play a leading role in advocating for African unity and economic empowerment.
He called on fellow African leaders to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive actions that will position the continent as a powerful global force.
“Now is the time for Africa to rise, and we can only do so if we stand together,” he concluded.
He spoke on Accra-based TV3 on Saturday, 8th February.
