The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Wengam, has said that a return to the authentic faith of the early fathers of Christianity is critical to advancing nation-building and sustainable development.

Speaking at the Watch Night Service of Cedar Mountain Chapel to usher in the New Year, Rev. Wengam drew lessons from the life of the biblical patriarch Abraham, whom he described as the Father of the Christian faith.

He urged Christians to emulate Abraham’s bold and radical faith, coupled with godly living, as a means of preserving and defending the Christian legacy.

According to Rev. Wengam, genuine faith must go beyond mere belief to reflect in character, patriotism and integrity.

He noted that Christians who live out their faith would become responsible citizens who are incorruptible and demonstrate strong work ethics, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic development.

He criticised the growing tendency of some Christians to serve God solely for material rewards, stressing that such an approach departs from the faith handed down by the early fathers of Christianity.

“Christian faith was not meant to be transactional,” he said, adding that proper teaching on holiness and righteous living must remain central to the Church’s mission.

Looking ahead, Rev. Wengam expressed optimism about the future of the country, saying that although Ghana may face challenges in 2026, the year would usher in greater prosperity and divine favour.

He also announced that all Assemblies of God churches across the country would observe a week-long fasting and prayer session from Monday, January 6, to Sunday, January 11, to intercede for the Church and the nation.

The Watch Night Service was attended by several dignitaries, including the Burkinabe Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. David Kabre.
