Ghana is “rising again,” President Mahama declares in 2026 New Year message
President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghana is firmly on the path of recovery and renewal, declaring that the country is “rising again” as it enters the New Year.
In his 2026 New Year message to the nation, delivered on January 1, 2026, President Mahama reflected on his first year in office, describing it as a period of difficult but necessary reforms aimed at resetting the country and restoring hope.
“One year ago, we inherited a nation in distress,” the president said, citing high inflation, unemployment, weakened infrastructure and eroded public trust.
Despite those challenges, he said Ghana has made significant progress through prudent economic management.
According to the president, inflation has been reduced from over 23 per cent at the end of 2024, with expectations of ending 2025 in single digits.
He also pointed to relative currency stability, renewed business confidence, increased investment, and the successful renegotiation of Ghana’s debt, noting that the country is beginning to exit the IMF programme “with dignity.”
President Mahama highlighted improvements in key sectors including construction, manufacturing, agriculture and services, saying these gains were creating new employment opportunities for young people. He also announced the rehabilitation of over 2,000 kilometres of roads nationwide and the expansion of rural electrification to more than 1,000 communities.
On the international front, the president said Ghana’s Reset Agenda had enhanced the country’s global standing. He referenced the Accra Reset Initiative, which he presented at the United Nations (UN), as part of efforts to reform global governance and expand opportunities for Africa and the Global South.
For 2026, President Mahama outlined priorities including digital education, universal primary health care, agricultural transformation, renewable energy expansion, social housing delivery, constitutional reforms and a renewed fight against corruption.
He called on Ghanaians to embrace unity and collective responsibility, stressing that national development transcends political affiliation.
“There is only one Ghana,” he said.
President Mahama concluded by expressing confidence in the country’s future and wishing Ghanaians peace, prosperity and progress in the new year.
