Tema police foil robbery attack at Afienya-Mataheko

The Tema Regional Police Command foiled an armed robbery attack at Afienya-Mataheko in the early hours of Monday, 29 December 2025, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has announced.

On Friday, 27 December 2025, the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) of the Tema Region received credible intelligence that a group of suspected armed robbers was planning attacks within the Tema Metropolis and its environs. Acting on this information, police officers were deployed and placed on surveillance.

At about 1 AM on 29 December 2025, police officers spotted four suspected robbers attempting to break into a residential premises at Afienya-Mataheko. Upon approaching the suspects, the police were met with gunfire, resulting in an exchange of fire.

During the encounter, four suspects sustained gunshot wounds. Three of them, identified as Kwabena 'Lastman' Azuwebi, Yaro Bawku, and Faisal, were rushed to the Police Hospital, Cantonments, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The fourth suspect, Kassim Hussein, was later arrested after being recaptured. He was taken to the hospital for treatment but died while receiving medical care.

Police recovered one AK-47 rifle, one Taurus pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition, two cutlasses, and two motorbikes - one unregistered and the other bearing registration number M-25-GT-4243. All exhibits have been retained for investigations.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary pending autopsy. Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other accomplices.

Police assured the public of their continued commitment to protecting lives and property and encouraged the public to support the police with timely and credible information. The statement also warned criminal elements that crime does not pay, and the police will continue to deal firmly with all offenders.
