Avoid harassing gov’t officials, seizing assets – NDC warns supporters
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned its supporters to refrain from seizing or destroying government property allegedly misappropriated by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This caution follows reports of incidents in which individuals believed to be affiliated with the NDC have unlawfully taken control of or damaged state assets.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 11 December, signed by its Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, the NDC appealed for calm and lawful conduct among party members.
The statement stressed that any suspicions of theft or mismanagement of government assets should be reported to the relevant authorities for investigation and proper action.
The statement, particularly directed at the party’s youth organisers, as well as regional and constituency executives, urged them to play a key role in preventing such activities and promoting order.
It emphasised the importance of respecting due process during the transition period and advised that government officials affiliated with the NPP should not be harassed or obstructed in their duties until the handover is complete.
“NPP members found to be in possession of government assets should be reported to the police, and they must provide justification for their possession, or the police should impound the assets until further investigation,” the statement said.
The statement continued that: “Government appointees and NPP officials should not be disturbed until the transition is concluded, as the current government remains in office, and officials should be allowed to carry out their normal duties, regardless of their political affiliation.”
It further warned against unnecessary entry into government offices, urging party supporters to avoid disrupting normal operations or causing disturbances.
“We must ensure that our youth do not invade any functioning government property or seize government assets, particularly consumables, fixtures, or relief items, without reporting them to the police, as such actions would constitute theft,” he stressed.
The NDC also urged party members to report any post-election recruitment efforts by various agencies to constituency and regional chairpersons, who would then notify the transition team for appropriate action.
“Wherever post-election recruitment is taking place, kindly report it to your constituency and regional chairpersons, who will take the necessary steps to report the matter to the transition team for further guidance and action,” the statement added.
