COVID-19: No lockdown decision now but all options on table – Gov’t
The government of Ghana has said it has not taken any decision to lockdown the national capital, Accra, as a result of the hike in COVID-19 cases but “all options remain on the table”.
Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said this at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, 24 March 2020.
“At this point in time, there’s no decision to lockdown but all options remain on the table.”, he told journalists, adding: “The President has said that any time he has to escalate his measures, he will do so, and if anybody or any group has some research propositions that they want to share to help the decision-making process, we are happy to receive it,” Mr Nkrumah said.
His comments come on the heels of Ghana recording 52 cases of COVID-19 with two deaths as of Tuesday.
In Africa, Rwanda has announced a lockdown while Ivory Coast and Senegal have declared emergencies.
The UK, US, EU and many other countries are currently in some degree of lockdown, with restaurants and bars, shops, schools and gyms closed with soldiers and police enforcing the directives to remain at home.
