Ebo Buckman hints NPP collapsed due to one-man rule

Ebo Buckman, Deputy Director of Communications of the United Patriotic (UP), has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has collapsed, arguing that the party no longer operates according to its constitution but rather under the voice of one man.

Speaking on The Citizen Show on Accra 100.5 FM, hosted by Kaakyire Appea-Apraku, Mr Buckman said there was a time when former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s voice became more powerful and more important than the NPP’s constitution.

According to him, if today’s NPP and today’s NDC existed in 1992 and he had to decide which party to consider, he would have chosen the NDC.

He explained that from 1992 to today, the NDC has progressed in terms of values and principles, while the NPP has moved away from its foundational ideals.

He said the NPP has become a party where one man’s voice is more powerful than the party’s constitution, describing the situation as a “rule of man”.

Mr Buckman stated that the collapse of the NPP began when some issues arose that certain people in the party did not want to hear.

He alleged that the party was taken over by a family, insisting that when Nana Akufo-Addo and his family took control of the party, it marked the end of the NPP.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo’s main objective was to become President, even if it meant collapsing the party to achieve that ambition.

He further explained that the NPP used to operate like a chain, where leadership moved from one person to another.

He cited the transitions from Professor Adu Boahen to John Agyekum Kufuor, and from Kufuor to Nana Akufo-Addo, as examples of how the party functioned.

Mr Buckman said the next transition should have been from Nana Akufo-Addo to Alan Kyerematen, but that did not happen because of what he described as “hatred with no sense and hatred with no meaning.”

He pointed to the departure of some senior party members, including Alan Kyerematen, as evidence that the party has broken down.
