Effutu: NDC threatens retaliation for destruction of billboards
Tensions are rising in the Efutu Constituency of the Central Region as members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) protest the destruction of their party’s billboards by the Efutu Municipal Assembly.
The NDC supporters are threatening to retaliate by tearing down billboards belonging to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The dispute began last Thursday when several billboards of NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Mr James Kofi Annan and Presidential Candidate John Dramani Mahama were reportedly destroyed at the Winneba Junction roundabout in the presence of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Kassim Zubeiru.
Enraged by the incident, some NDC members responded by pulling down NPP billboards that were mounted in the same area. The situation escalated further on Sunday when more NDC billboards were discovered vandalized, prompting anger among party supporters.
The NDC grassroots were particularly infuriated by the presence of police officers protecting NPP billboards at the roundabout, leading to confrontations.
Party leaders and the Winneba Divisional Police Command struggled to control the situation and prevent further escalation.
Speaking to Central Regional Correspondent Nana Tawiah of Class 93.1 FM, NDC Constituency Secretary Abraham Henry Arthur expressed dissatisfaction with the police’s handling of the situation, indicating that the party feels left with no choice but to retaliate if their concerns are not addressed.
The situation remains tense as the NDC demands a fair resolution to the ongoing destruction of their campaign materials ahead of the 2024 elections.
