Ejisu elects new MP today
The Electoral Commission (EC) will today, Tuesday, 30 April 2024, hold by-elections in the Ejisu constituency in the Ashanti region.
This follows the passing of the late Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, on Thursday, 7 March, 2024.
In the political arena, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has put forward Kwabena Boateng as their nominee to vie for the vacant seat.
Mr. Boateng emerged from a selection process that involved nine contenders on Saturday, 13 April, 2024. Tasked with preserving the party's stance, Mr. Boateng aims to fill the void left by Dr. Kumah's departure.
However, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) opted out of participating in the by-election.
Hence, Mr. Boateng's rival, in the by-election is the former constituency MP Kwabena Aduomi, who is running independently following his separation from the NPP.
The by-election will begin at 7am to 5pm.
Meanwhile, the EC has confirmed its readiness for the by-election in Ejisu.
The EC asserted its preparedness to conduct a professional and impartial electoral process.
The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Mr. Serebour Quaicoe, affirmed the commission's commitment to ensuring free and fair elections while emphasising the importance of voter protection.
Mr. Quaicoe urged voters to refrain from causing disruptions at the polling stations, underscoring the need for a peaceful and orderly voting environment.
A significant turnout is anticipated, with a total of 106,816 registered voters expected to exercise their franchise across the 204 polling stations within the constituency.
