Galamsey Cases: NDC dropped all their cases to chase NPP figures - Kojo Oppong alleges
Former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has alleged that after President John Dramani Mahama assumed office, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) discontinued prosecutions involving its own members accused of engaging in galamsey and turned their attention on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
"There were several top NDC people who were on trial, and there was no interest in deliberately trying to railroad them into jail because the belief has always been to let the wheels of justice grind as they will," he said on Asempa FM.
"Some of these NDC people had filed submissions of no case but the courts rejected them. We all know this government either filed nolle prosequi or withdrew the cases to get them all off the hook including those whose submissions of no case had been rejected by the court. The NDC said they would not let them answer questions," he said.
"Then after that, they went on a spree chasing NPP people," he alleged.
The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Mr Oppong Nkrumah further cited the arrest of Dennis "Miracles" Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as one of the attempts by the NDC under the Mahama leadership to pursue their main political opponents.
He also mentioned Kumasi-based TikToker Mameone, an NPP supporter, as another person who had been arrested.
"Last night, they were looking for lawyers to be with her," he said.
He also criticised the prosecution of TikToker Camilla Alhassan, saying she was originally arraigned before a court without legal representation and her plea was taken.
He said that after Camilla later secured a lawyer, a request for her plea to be retaken on the grounds that she had entered the original plea without legal advice was refused.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah further recalled an incident in which personnel from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) stormed the home of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour over comments he made in Parliament on behalf of the Minority.
"I was part of those who went to the house to stop that arrest," he said.
"The BNI personnel had guns and wore balaclavas. They came to arrest a Member of Parliament for saying something the government didn't like."
He said all of this culminated in the prosecution and sentencing of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard "Wontumi" Antwi Boasiako over illegal mining.
"We've had several instances of intimidation, and now you bring this Wontumi matter," he said.
