Cocoa farmers across Ghana have been urged to remain patient as the government works to improve conditions in the sector, with indications that a producer price review could take effect next year.

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, made the appeal at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region during the launch of an agricultural mechanisation programme by Captains Tractors.

The event also featured an engagement session with cocoa farmers in the area.

Addressing the farmers, Mr. Dumelo acknowledged concerns over the current cocoa producer price and the strain it has placed on livelihoods.

He assured them that the government is committed to reviewing the price next year to better reflect global market conditions and the efforts of farmers.

He disclosed that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Cocoa Board, to ensure that cocoa farmers receive a fair share of export proceeds.

The Deputy Minister, who is also the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, also responded to concerns raised by farmers in the Kwahu Afram Plains regarding the destruction of crops by Fulani herdsmen.

He indicated that measures are being put in place to address the issue and provide lasting relief to affected communities.

In his remarks, the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, appealed to the Deputy Minister to intensify efforts to curb the destruction of farmlands.

He called for strict enforcement of regulations, including requiring cattle owners to utilise designated fodder banks to prevent encroachment on farms.

Mr. Dumelo also commended Captains Tractors for supporting mechanised agriculture in the Kwahu area, describing it as a vital step toward boosting productivity and improving farmers’ incomes.
