Gov’t frowns on post-retirement contract for appointees

The Government of Ghana has announced the immediate suspension of post-retirement contract appointments for retired public service staff.
This directive was contained in an official statement signed by the Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama. According to the statement, all requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.
The move forms part of efforts by the government to streamline public sector employment and create opportunities for younger professionals within the civil and public service space.
The statement emphasized that the directive takes effect immediately, and Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and other public sector institutions have been advised to comply accordingly.
While no specific reason was given for the sudden policy shift, the suspension is expected to impact various institutions that traditionally rely on the expertise of retired professionals through contract extensions.
Analysts believe this decision could signal a renewed focus on youth employment and succession planning within the public sector, although it may also raise concerns about the potential loss of institutional memory and experienced leadership in some critical sectors.
