Ho Central MP defends gov't’s economic record, dismisses Minority’s criticism
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho Central, Richmond Edem Kofi Kpotosu, has pushed back against criticism from the Minority in Parliament over the current state of Ghana’s economy.
The Minority caucus has accused the government of artificially managing the economy, arguing that while official economic indicators appear positive, the realities faced by ordinary Ghanaians tell a different story.
According to them, the improving macroeconomic figures do not reflect conditions on the ground.
Responding to the claims, Mr Kpotosu dismissed the criticism, stating that the Minority would continue to find fault with the government regardless of the progress made.
“They will still complain even if they are served with gold,” he remarked, suggesting that the opposition’s stance is politically motivated.
The Ho Central legislator maintained that the true measure of the government’s performance lies in the lived experiences of the Ghanaian people.
He pointed to what he described as significant improvements in key economic indicators over the past year.
According to him, in 2024 fuel prices were hovering around GH¢17 per litre, while the cedi had depreciated to nearly GH¢17 to the dollar. However, he indicated that within a year, fuel prices have dropped to about GH¢9.99 per litre, and the cedi is now trading at approximately GH¢10 to the dollar.
He argued that these developments demonstrate tangible economic recovery and prudent management by the government.
MP Kpotosu, therefore, urged Ghanaians to remain hopeful and supportive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, stating that the government has begun implementing policies aimed at stabilising and strengthening the economy.
He emphasised that, ultimately, it is the Ghanaian public who will judge the government’s performance based on improvements in their daily lives.
“The verdict lies in the hands of the people,” he said.
