The Council of Elders of the Convention People’s Party has described a decision to declare a vote of no confidence on all its national executives as an affront to the dictates of the party’s constitution.

A statement issued and signed by the Vice Chairman of the Council of Elders, Comrade Christian Yao Zigah, on Wednesday, 6 December 2023, indicated that he witnessed all that happened at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

The statement informed all members and sympathisers of the party that “the said NEC meeting which was supposed to have nullified the position of national officers was carried out without due process as per Article 82 of the party’s constitution and, therefore, null and void.”

It, therefore, called on party members and sympathisers to “ignore” the said announcement.

“All should remain calm and the council will resolve all these matters in due course,” the statement added. 

The NEC of the CPP issued a vote of no confidence in all its national executives, compelling them to resign or face removal from their positions. 

The unanimous decision was reached during a meeting held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the performance of the party's leadership, members from across the country advocated a change, leading to the call for the resignation of all national executives. 

The meeting, however, witnessed a significant level of discord, with some members specifically petitioning for the removal of the national chairperson.

In response to the call for change, the NEC has established a 13-member interim body comprising regional chairmen, a member of the council of elders, regional secretaries, regional organisers, and representatives from the women and youth factions.

Nana Yaa Jantuah, the General Secretary, confirmed her resignation in an interview with the media. 

She stated: "I’m gone. I think I’ve done what I have to do. I’m no longer the General Secretary of the CPP.” 

According to her, she would announce her political allegiance in due time.

“In due course, I will let everybody know where my political allegiance will be. For now, it’s time for family and friends. I’m going to spend time with my family and friends. For now, I’m going to concentrate on my business".

“They think some other people can do it better. In political parties, you do not hold on to things. I have done what I have to do these past three years and everybody has seen it. If my people say they do not want me, I can’t force myself on them,” Ms Juantuah intimated.
